What is substance abuse treatment
There are a variety of intervention and treatment options designed to promote stability and help people start their recovery journey. Substance abuse treatment for adults
Adult Substance Use Services names the adult array: withdrawal management services; intensive and supportive residential treatment; outpatient treatment; medication assisted treatment; co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders treatment services; specialized female treatment services for pregnant women and women with dependent children. Texas residents 18 years of age and older; person is diagnosed with a substance use disorder; eligibility for state financial support is based on income, expenses, and other resources. In some cases, a person may be required to pay a portion of the services cost.
Youth substance use treatment
Texas residents ages 13 to 17 with a diagnosed substance use disorder are eligible for treatment. Severity of the disorder determines the specific type of treatment that is needed. Young adults ages 18 to 21 may be admitted to a youth treatment program if screening shows the person's needs, experiences, and behavior are like those of youth clients. Residential treatment services for substance use disorders are provided in licensed facilities where the youth stay in a dormitory-like environment during the treatment process. Treatment includes counseling, case management, education, and recovery skills training. Intensive residential treatment provides at least 45 hours per week at a licensed treatment center. Youth will attend school while in treatment. Supportive residential services are delivered at least 21 hours per week. Youth will attend school while in treatment. Outpatient treatment services for youth are delivered in a community clinic setting. Services are for youth who do not need a highly structured environment and can live at home.
Evidence-based substance abuse treatment before a diagnosis
Youth prevention programs are intended to serve youth Pre-K through Grade 12 - before the onset of a substance use disorder - to prevent or reduce the risk of developing a health problem. Programs support positive youth development through the use of evidence-based approaches endorsed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Substance abuse treatment and recovery housing
A recovery residence refers to a supportive, shared living environment founded on peer support and connection to community services that promote a person's active participation in their own recovery. Recovery residences are free from alcohol and other substances and are a common pathway used to transition back into the community following residential treatment. The Health and Human Services Commission partners with Oxford House, Inc. and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston to provide access to level 1, 2, and 3 recovery residences across Texas. House Bill 299, 88th Legislature, 2023, Regular Session added Chapter 469 in the Texas Health and Safety Code. Section 469.002 requires HHSC to create recovery housing voluntary accreditation rules. Free substance abuse treatment
Outreach, screening, assessment, and referral programs are available to all persons looking for information about substance use services. The only requirement for OSAR services is that a person must be currently residing in the State of Texas. For immediate and confidential help, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, call the OSAR in the region. A person may also request help by contacting 211 Texas or calling 877-541-7905.
