Difference between detox and rehab

Withdrawal management often includes the use of medication to treat withdrawal symptoms. There are two types of adult substance use withdrawal management services: ambulatory withdrawal management, where a person travels to a licensed site daily to get treatment; and residential withdrawal management services, where a person stays at a licensed site that has 24-hour monitoring. Staff medically monitor and support a person to safely complete the withdrawal process. Trained staff prepare a person to make informed choices about the next steps in recovery.

Residential treatment includes counseling, case management, education, and recovery skills training. The treatment process helps a person identify the causes and effects of substance use, develop healthy ways to cope with life's problems, and learn ways to decrease the risk of returning to use.

Medical detox and rehab

26 TAC 564.902: a facility providing detoxification services shall ensure every individual admitted to a detoxification program meets the DSM criteria for substance intoxication or withdrawal. The face-to-face examination (history and physical examination) and signed orders of admission shall occur within 24 hours of admission. Detoxification programs shall have a licensed vocational nurse or registered nurse on duty for at least eight hours every day and a physician or designee on call 24 hours a day. Detoxification programs shall ensure that detoxification services are accessible at least 16 hours per day, seven days per week. At a minimum, monitoring should be done every four hours in residential detoxification programs for the first 72 hours and as ordered by the medical director or designee thereafter. In residential programs, direct care staff shall be on duty where the clients are located 24 hours a day.

Do I need detox before rehab

Ambulatory withdrawal management is not a stand-alone service in HHSC contractor language: the client is simultaneously admitted to a substance use disorder treatment service while admitted to ambulatory detoxification services. Residential treatment is a later or parallel HHSC page: people stay for a short period of time at a licensed treatment center.
