Alcohol addiction treatment in Texas
Updated
Alcohol addiction treatment in Texas is treatment for alcohol dependence on the U.S. labels and chemical dependency counseling under Texas Occupations Code Chapter 504.

Medication for alcohol addiction
NIAAA names three Food and Drug Administration-approved medications for the treatment of alcohol use disorder: disulfiram (Antabuse), naltrexone (oral Revia and injectable Vivitrol), and acamprosate (Campral).
REVIA (naltrexone hydrochloride tablets) 50 mg: a dose of 50 mg once daily is recommended for most patients. The placebo-controlled studies that demonstrated the efficacy of REVIA as an adjunctive treatment of alcoholism used a dose regimen of REVIA 50 mg once daily for up to 12 weeks. Other dose regimens or durations of therapy were not evaluated in those trials. REVIA is not aversive therapy and does not cause a disulfiram-like reaction either as a result of opiate use or ethanol ingestion. REVIA should be considered as only one of many factors determining the success of treatment of alcoholism.
Acamprosate (Campral) on the U.S. label
CAMPRAL is indicated for the maintenance of abstinence from alcohol in patients with alcohol dependence who are abstinent at treatment initiation. Treatment with CAMPRAL should be part of a comprehensive management program that includes psychosocial support. The efficacy of CAMPRAL in promoting abstinence has not been demonstrated in subjects who have not undergone detoxification and not achieved alcohol abstinence prior to beginning CAMPRAL treatment. The efficacy of CAMPRAL in promoting abstinence from alcohol in polysubstance abusers has not been adequately assessed.
Disulfiram on the U.S. label
Disulfiram should never be administered to a person in a state of alcohol intoxication, or without that person's full knowledge. Disulfiram should never be administered until the person has abstained from alcohol for at least 12 hours. Disulfiram is an aid in the management of selected chronic alcohol patients who want to remain in a state of enforced sobriety so that supportive and psychotherapeutic treatment may be applied to best advantage. Disulfiram is not a cure for alcoholism. Reactions may occur with alcohol up to 14 days after ingesting disulfiram. The label warns to avoid alcohol in disguised forms: sauces, vinegars, cough mixtures, and aftershave lotions.
